Definition: A group of hormone-like substances produced by your body that regulate various biological processes, including inflammation.

There are different prostaglandin subtypes. Some contribute to inflammation (PGE2), and some diminish its effects (PGE1 and PGE3).

Prostaglandins are also known as inflammatory eicosanoids and are created in your body's cells from various fatty acids, many of which you eat in your diet. PGE2 formation and action can be reduced through medication and the consumption of more omega-3 fish oil.

As cancer is an inflammatory condition, prostaglandins play a role in its development.

Pronunciation: PROS-tah-gland-ins
Also Known As: eicosanoids
Common Misspellings: prostuglandins
Examples: She was offered a clinical trial using anti-prostaglandin therapy.
