Definition: Anastomosis during ovarian cancer surgery usually means reconnecting two segments of the intestine. It can also mean reconnection of any two body parts or organs, usually tubular structures which carry urine or stool. In most cases this is done during cytoreductive surgery in order to remove bowel, or parts of other organs, that are involved by cancer. The anastomosis is done in order to avoid an "ostomy" or opening of the bowel or urinary system to the skin (e.g. colostomy).
Pronunciation: Ah-NAS-tah-moe-sys
Also Known As: hookup reanastamosis joining
Examples: During cytoreduction a cancer-involved part of the colon was removed and anastomosis was performed, avoiding a colostomy.
