Definition: Often incorrectly called "the stomach," the abdomen is the large space that contains the stomach, all of your intestines, the liver, gall bladder, spleen, and other organs. The gynecologic organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are in the pelvis, which is the lowest part of the abdomen. The abdomen and pelvis are "connected" internally, so that part of the intestines rest in the pelvis, mainly due to gravity. The abdomen is internally lined by a skin-like thin tissue called the peritoneum.
Pronunciation: AB-doh-men
Also Known As: stomach, belly, tummy
Common Misspellings: abdomin
Examples: Ovarian cancer rarely spreads beyond the abdomen and pelvis.
